A Sad Day in Surfing - World Champ Andy Irons Passes Away

Photobucket
source

Yesterday was a sad, sad day for the surfing world; a true champion and a great man has been taken away from us.

The untimely death of Andy Irons at 32 is both shocking and chilling. A lifelong surfer who warmed our hearts with his smile and world class wave-riding, Andy will never be forgotten.

The full impact of what has transpired has not completely hit me as I write these difficult words.

The surfing world looked up to Andy ever since he was on the world stage and especially during the battles with Kelli; it was a period of time when he was unstoppable, a master of his domain. This is how we should remember Andy, a force to be reckoned with, a powerful personality who was both admirable and intimidating at the same time. No one ever wanted to have their heat with Andy. That’s a fact.

I, personally, had the luxury of surfing with him in 2008 during off-day at pipe. We surfed Ehukai Beach Park with Kelli and other pros. This session was the best I ever had, and not because of my surfing but because it was a dream come true to be in the water with Andy and the guys and to just free surf for the purest reasons we all do it.

Our hearts go out to his family and young wife; as they mourn and remember Andy.

R.I.P Andy Irons.

SUPing the Holy Land of Israel

Photobucket

Israel, the holy land. Origin of the three monotheistic faiths and place of much diversity and events in its early existence.

Israel also boasts an incredibly unique topography and bodies of water.

To the north lies the Sea of Galilee, the lowest fresh water lake on earth, and the Jordan River.

If you follow the Jordan River you will end up at the Dead Sea, the lowest saltwater lake on earth with such a high salt content that one is able to float effortlessly.

The southernmost point of Israel is home to the Red Sea, the premier home to coral reefs and scuba diving.

Israel is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on its West side.

For us, this was a trip back home to visit our families and friends except that this time we had a goal: to ride our Focus Surfboards SUPs in Israel from the North to the South.

Our trip started in the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Kineret Lake.

Photobucket

Located in the city of Tiberius under the Golan Heights, the Kineret is refuge for many locals and tourists who come to dip in the cool fresh mountain waters and relax in the sun. Seeing us on the SUP boards was a brand new experience for them.

The children kept asking us about the SUP boards and if we could give them a ride… we ended up spending 30 minutes taxiing kids from point to point, they refused to get off the boards!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Just below the Kineret the Jordan River began to flow southbound. Located near the start of the river is a very unique and holy place called The Yardenit. It is here that John the Baptist baptized Jesus according to the Gospel.

Photobucket

This is undoubtedly a holy place for Christians and Catholics throughout the world as well as an amazing place to paddle.

The Yardenit is about 30ft wide and is laced with tall trees on both banks, creating a shadowy cover from the heat.

Photobucket

The water is green and cool with a very slow current. We paddled against the current enjoying the serene waters and met people camping on the banks. Local kids were swinging on a tree swing straight into the water.

Photobucket

The baptismal site is located upstream and once we got there we saw an actual Baptism taking place. This was a new and exciting experience for us, being Jewish we had never witnessed this ritual and were fortunate with our timing.

Photobucket

The day ended with a fish dinner in Tiberius, sitting on the lake side and reflecting on our amazing day.

Our next stop was a demo day for people to explore Stand Up Paddling in the Mediterranean Sea.

Photobucket

The SUP scene in Israel is very young; there are some other brands in the water but most people have no clue what is SUP.

We held our demo day at Neve-Yam beach in the city of Atlit. With water temperatures at 88F and outside temperature much hotter, the sea is refuge for most Israelis in the summer.

We had about 50 people attend the demo day and all were amazed at the SUP boards. Some surfers rode the waves for the first time on a SUP board and did pretty well.

Photobucket

Photobucket

With BBQ and drinks, the demo day lasted until sundown, we left burnt from the sun and happy in our hearts.

The smiles on peoples’ faces when they tried and rode the SUP boards were so rewarding and made everything worthwhile.

The next and most challenging part of the trip was the drive and ride in the Dead Sea.

Photobucket

Photobucket

It is a 5 hour drive from Haifa, our home town in the North, and with temperatures reaching 115F and no shade it wasn’t going to be easy.

The Dead Sea, as the name implies has no life in or around it. The salt level is too high for life to exist. We had to count on the local hotels and lifeguards for some shade and a place to rest.

Quickly people gathered around us asking questions about our boards, the carbon paddles and pretty much everything SUP.

The lifeguards typically use the SUP “equivalent” called HASAKE, a very large and bulky deck style vessel. It uses an aluminum paddle about 10 feet long with double blades. Once they grabbed hold of the carbon paddles they were amazed by the strength and lightness of them.

We had a two hour session with several SUP’s and the HASAKE; the floatation is unreal and most of us will never get to experience it anywhere else in the world. The Dead Sea delivered a great day in the blistering hot sun.

Next was the tourist city of Eilat. The city is on the banks of the Red Sea near Jordan and Egypt. A world renowned vacation spot especially for scuba diving and wind surfing.

Photobucket

The city and its large hotels have a canal system running thru its large harbor area.
We paddled the canals during sunset hours; the red sky was coming down on the Desert Mountains with a peaceful wind.

During the canal paddle a police officer asked us what we were doing, it must have been a sight to see us standing on water next to yachts and fishing boats.

In summary we spent 14 days paddling up and down the coast and the rivers of Israel, experiencing spots that are rare and exclusive to this part of the world. Being in the birthplace of three major religions was a new and exhilarating experience for us.

Photobucket

If we learned one thing from the trip it is that people will always welcome you in and treat you with respect if you do the same.

Focus™ Team Rider IKAIKA KAWAI, SUP WORLD TOUR 2010

Focus™ Team Rider IKAIKA KAWAI makes impressive sophomore pro-debut at the 2010 SUP World Tour

After being invited to the Waterman League’s 2010 SUP World Tour, Focus™ team rider Ikaika Kawai traveled to Anglet, France to compete in the 2nd leg of the tour. His first time in France was cold, overcast, and exciting as he competed for the win against the best international surfers in the world.

For 5 days, in rough waves, frigid water and low surf, Kawai won his successive heats and placed in the 1st round of the SUP World Tour finals. There his competition in France ended, but it was an extraordinary effort for his sophomore pro event.

“We are very proud of Ikaika, and very impressed. As a newcomer to pro surfing, and to make it all the way to the finals at such a tough competition is a huge accomplishment.” Focus CEO Jacon Benzvi said, “Additionally, we want to thank local Maui sponsors Da Rush, Mulligan’s on the Blue, and Mana Foods for their generous sponsorship of Ikaika’s trip to France and Tahiti.”

Kawai continued on to Tahiti to compete in the 3rd leg of the SUP World Tour which begins Saturday, May 20th, 2010.

SUP in the news...

When Southern California surfer Jodie Nelson set out Sunday to standup-paddle nearly 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point, she hoped it'd inspire her best friend, who has been involved in a long and exhausting struggle with breast cancer, to keep fighting.

Nelson, 34, whose mother and aunt are cancer survivors, also hoped her nine-hour test of endurance would raise money for two cancer charities and heighten awareness about a plight affecting millions of women.

What Nelson did not figure on was that a 30-foot minke whale would swim alongside her 14-foot board and accompany the surfer as she stood and paddled for two of those nine hours, thus joining the cause.

"It was a day that all of us involved will never forget," the San Clemente resident says, in reference to Angela Robinson, her best friend, and the rest of a crew aboard an escort boat.

Minke whales are not commonly seen off Southern California, and those spotted by boaters are often elusive. So when a mammal Nelson named Larry chose to become part of her endeavor to become the first woman to make this long paddle, she took it as a sign.

"To me it was a total God thing," she said. "We prayed at 4 that morning that God would reveal his beauty and creation and nature, and allow me to endure this long trek, so for me it's not such a huge surprise that this happened."

Larry did not merely swim close to Nelson. He rolled around repeatedly alongside her and blew bubbles beneath her board. A film crew was on the escort boat and CNN, Fox News and ABC are just some of the networks she says are interested in her story and the footage.

Alisa Schulman-Janiger, an American Cetacean Society whale researcher, said minke whales can be friendly but added: "This type of quality encounter is highly unusual."

Nelson raised only about $6,000 in advance of the paddle, disappointingly short of her target of $100,000 for the Keep a Breast Foundation and Boarding for Breast Cancer. A few of her celebrity friends let her down, she said, but when this story reaches a national audience she expects the pool to grow considerably.

"I thought, 'I don't need so-and-so,' " she said of a particular celebrity, whom she declined to name. "Because I honestly feel like Larry is going to help us reach the $100,000 mark with our fund-raising effort."

Larry or no Larry, completing a standup paddle over 39.8 miles of ocean and sharks speaks volumes about Nelson's strength, stamina and determination.

Larry took her mind off the task for two magical hours, but her mind never strayed from the cause. "I can't even begin to compare what I did to what cancer patients are going through," she said. "But I wanted to put myself out there in a dangerous and scary, overwhelming situation; something that was big and just to show people that you can win that battle with that big, scary thing called cancer.

"I wanted to draw some kind of parallel and just encourage people to keep fighting."

Those wishing to help Nelson reach her target can do so via her page on the Keep a Breast Foundation website.

Welcome Sam Pa’e, Focus' Newest Team Rider!

Focus Surfboards & SUPs welcomes local Hawaiian SUP rider and expert, Sam Pa’e, to the Focus SUP Team Riders! Recognized as a huge talent in SUP wave riding and sport outreach, we are thrilled to add Pa’e to our wave riding family.

Sam Pa’e has as extensive a background in SUP as you can find, his goes back to 2004, the early first years of the sport. Being a life-long wave rider and ocean enthusiast, he quickly picked up the basics of SUP riding. Over the years and by entering local Hawaiian & mainland SUP contests, his impressive SUP skills and accomplishments have grown.

Some of the contests he has competed in are big names in the SUP community, such as Duke Fest, Buffalo's Big Board Contest, China Uyemura Classics, and the Quicksilver Makahiki Games.

Says Pa’e, “I also entered a few outer island SUP events like to Naish PaddleBoard Race, and The Olukai SUP Internationals.” In traveling to Dana Point, CA for the Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, he won 1st in his class during the open event race.

These competitions and his constant strong showings put him on a winning streak cumulating in an invitation to enter the SUP World Tour. One of his most memorable experiences was during the 2010 Ku Ikaika Expression Session, held in Makaha on March 1, 2010. Says Pa’e, “The waves were breaking from 10-15ft and up 25ft........HUGE!”

When asked about his SUP outreach efforts, Pa’e replied, “I love to share my Mana’o (knowledge) with anyone who wants to learn. This is something that has been passed down from my family. The biggest favor you can ever return to someone who has given the knowledge to you is to pass it on to the next generation. Then, it will be passed on in the future and that’s the true Aloha spirit.

Welcome Sam Pa’e, Focus' Newest Team Rider!

Focus Backdoor Pro

Focus Surfboards sponsored our first pro event, held at the legendary break BACKDOOR, Bat Galim Haifa, Israel.
The event was in memory of Ofer Zehavi, Alon Shimony and Guy Tzoref.
It was an amazing event with 3-4ft waves and some stormy condition. The storm didn’t prevent the surfers to show up and give their best to entertain the crowd of hundreds of people who stopped by during the day to see the event.

I will post the names of the winners later on, first place juniors and first place men won FOCUS boards! Lucky guys!

I also want to thank Billabong, Hurley and Ofer Mano who arranged the event; we are looking forward to more events like that this coming year.

Here is a link to some pictures on FACEBOOK; we will have a complete album this week.

Website! - Website!

Who thought to make a website will take so long?
But we are working very hard on it, gathering lots of media and text to really educate and bring the joy of surfing and paddle boarding to everyone out there.

In the past several months we had several photo sessions, contests, charity events and a few new team riders.
Next week we will introduce a little guy named Travis, he is little since he is just 13!! But when you see him rip with the FOCUS SUP you will quickly realize this ripper is headed to greatness. We are totally stocked about it!

Next month we have an important event in Japan with our local head dealer and also a new dealer in Europe… so much work and so little time.
So stay tuned for more news and update from your friends at FOCUS SURFBOARDS.

Thanks
Jacob
